Provisional identification: Cardinal Alessandro Farnese to Giovanni Poggio, bishop of Tropea, papal nuncio at the court of Charles V in Spain. Rome, April 1542; the precise day remains uncertain.

Date qualification: the edited cleartext on 070r retains alli XXV del [passato], but XXV is not a secure reading. Further numeral strokes may give xxviij (28), consistent with the published departure date of 28 March. See the article's note on Ricci.

This edited reading rests on the public transcription of ASV_i1025_SdS_Spain_IA-2, corrected against manuscript photographs supplied through DECODE record 92 on 15 September 2026. The corrected transcription has 6,562 digit tokens. The correction ledger contains 129 entries, of which two remain open and are not applied. The readings are supported by the individual decisions and dot decisions. The full-resolution photographs have restricted access and are not reproduced in full here.

Two kinds of passage are distinguished by folio:

Cleartext (edited): editorial reconstructions of portions originally written in clear, included for context. These passages have been corrected, supplied, and abridged from the public transcription.
Decipherment (edited): the proposed reading of the enciphered portions, using the candidate key in key.md. Word division, punctuation, and expansions of che/chi/qua/que/qui/non and the title codes are editorial. The key has no code for h and one code, 1, for both u and v, and the encipherer generally wrote single consonants. The reading's spelling is not uniform: it keeps enciphered forms in places (quela, dela, patirano, sendo, noticia), normalizes elsewhere (tutte, essendo where the cipher has the e), and writes u or v editorially.

In the decipherment, square brackets mark letters that do not rest on the corrected transcription's digits as the key reads them: a letter with no digit behind it (h throughout, Dori[a], Massimi[li]an[o]), a letter whose digit is read as another digit (Go[n]zaga, where the page has a 2-form for 7), a letter standing on an unreadable ? (po[t]rà), and a two-digit code with one digit missing (in[s]ieme). P[o]ui[glio] is completed from historical context: the digits give p·ui. […] marks unresolved stretches; ellipses also mark omissions in the edited cleartext.

Known bracket omission: the u in sua parte (071r) is unbracketed, although the corrected transcription offers 3/7 and the reading requires 1. The alignment records 3/7>1 but incorrectly labels it alt, a choice between offered alternatives. It is a substitution.

alignment.txt aligns this edited text token by token with the corrected transcription. Its recorded tally has 59 supplied letters, 45 digit substitutions (37 in the listed confusion classes, eight outside), 37 unreadable digits filled, and four pairs with one digit missing. It also records 22 mark operations (16 ignored, six supplied), six dropped digits, ten tokens read as nulls, and seven entries labeled as alternative choices. The mislabeled 3/7>1 means the substitution tally is one too low and the alternative-choice tally one too high. Of the 6,562 tokens, 5,993 are read exactly and 365 as the null 9. Departure categories consume 170 tokens, and gaps consume 34. These token counts differ from operation counts.

The alignment finds a least-cost fit for an already supplied text. Bracketed supplements receive a reduced cost, and gaps can absorb digits without cost. It records how the reading accounts for the digits, not an independent test of its correctness. Both the transcription and the edition changed after the manuscript check. The earlier alignment therefore aligns a different edition, not this text against the old digits.

The 072r and 071v readings changed after blind rereads, and every cipher folio changed after the manuscript check. Both blind readers were fresh GPT-6 Astra runs. They shared the key, transcription, and language-model-selected strict segmentation, but received neither the edition nor manuscript images. Their packets omitted unreadable tokens and short fragments and used the first listed alternatives. Their independence is limited to the subsequent reading task. The notes below distinguish their proposals from later ink checks.

The supplementary reading.txt preserves the automatic reading, including rejected santa for spesa and g u i for navi. The file guide explains the edition files and machine-key notation. The transcription appendix contains the source texts and decisions, while the results supplement reports the recovery and control results, including training-text overlap.

Notes on the reading

These notes distinguish earlier proposals from the manuscript-checked edition above. Earlier bracket patterns and digit sequences are retained where they explain a change in the reading.

The digits 0 5 7 8 0 5 read either santa or spesa; the three places the first edition of this file read la santa [impresa] are la spesa (the expense), which is what the whole passage is about.
7 5 1 6 is navi (n a u i), not g u i: le cento navi, galere et navi, armar cento navi, pagar etiam dele navi.
è forzata di caricarle de soldati et homini suoi proprii (071r): the Pope is forced to man the ships with his own men; the two reasons that follow (his soldiers would otherwise take foreign pay; his neutrality must be kept visible) explain that constraint. The earlier reading è fuora [di pensare] was wrong.
S.M.tà Ces. (Sua Maestà Cesarea) appears three times, written as the code for S.M.tà followed by the letters c e s.
la qual insino a Luca … ne richiese S.S.tà: Charles V asked Paul III for the Hungarian subsidy at their meeting in Lucca, September 1541, according to this decipherment. The article's source notes distinguish corroboration of the earlier discussions and public offer from the still-unidentified enclosure.
Ridolfo Gonzaga, fiolo del Signor Giouan Francesco … forteza di Luzara … del Signor Massimiliano suo fratelo … castel suo proprio nel tenitorio di Parma: the Gonzaga genealogy connects Gianfrancesco with both sons and associates Rodolfo with Poviglio. A published inventory describes a 1546 letter to Rodolfo as signore di Poviglio. These sources support the proposed place-name, without establishing a countship or papal fief. See the article's Gonzaga sources. The page reads 5 57 4 2 8 6 7 9 57 1 6 9 after et si è venuto (the 6 was missing from the transcription): a pore in · pui ·, i.e. a porre in P[o]ui[glio] if the clerk dropped the o and the ending, which the genealogy supports but the digits do not prove; a porre in [un] castel suo propio is the alternative. il qual luogo follows exactly (6 03 2̇7 03 03 1 4 75 4; the first edition's [ne]l read the 6 as 8).
7 3 8 0 3 8 8 0̇ 8 1 8 is dele terre (with 1 for 2), 8 0 8 5̇ 7 8 0 4 is esequito (with the qui code), 0 8 5 7 6 8 0 2 5 8 0 5 8 0 6 is habile a … trattati.
The cipher writes sendo (071v twice, 072r once) where the first edition of this file normalized to essendo; e·sendo with the e occurs on 071r and 071v. Likewise 7 4 8 6 2 7 6 (071v) is noticia, not notitia, and 072v publico et comun[e]. Il Signor has no digit for the e (3 1 7 6 9 0 3 = mun il), so comun may be the encipherer's apocope.
Before the manuscript check, 072r ben conte[n]ti, dimandone molto più was tentative. The public transcription's digits 2 7 4 9 7 8 0 8 4 8 0 6 7 3 6 3 5 7 7 3 4 7 8 read conteoti dimandone (with the null after co). Contenti required reading 4 as 7, or reading it as null and supplying n. The earlier alignment records the latter. The first edition's contenti et si dimandone needed six operations. The ink check then found 7 where the transcription had 4, making contenti exact. The earlier gi[o]rni (072v, 7 5 6 7 2 7 6) likewise became giorni after the ink check corrected 7 to 4.
Before the ink check, 072r et lo prome[tt]a […] read the public transcription's 5 7 2 4 3 8 8 9 5 as prometa, with 0 for 9. The first edition's promette needed a substitution and a dropped digit. The subjunctive matches V.S. ne stia sicura et lo prometta. The manuscript check settled prometa, which the edition now prints without brackets.
072r, revised after the blind reread of 15 September 2026, before the manuscript check: reader's input and reading. The digits 1 8 2 5 0 3 5 3 5 7 5 6 4 2 5 7 6 8 7 5 are verà la magior piena exactly; the first edition had absorbed verà into the gap before them and supplied [che potrà] after piena with no digit behind it. da [che] [p]arte for the twelve digits before verà (7̇ 3 5 3 7 5 3 5 2 8 0 8) is the reader's conjecture: 7̇ 3 = d with a stray dot, 3 7 read as 2 7̇ (che), 5 3 as 5 7 (p), then arte exact. It fits the digit count where da qual parte would need two digits more, and it echoes 070v in qual parte habbia ad esser il bisogno maggior. 2̇ 7 4 before di là is qua o; the gap now covers only 9̇ 4̇ 72 6, of which 72 6 may be [d]i (2/3), giving di qua o di là. The subsequent ink check corrected a 3 to 2 in the earlier sequence, and the edition now reads da che parte with one stray dot. The correction ledger records the corrected digits.
072r, same revision: 5 6 2 8 0 4 after dela summa del is ai[u]to with 1 for 2 (previously a gap). In Ci[u]it[au]echia [et al]tri luochi maritimi the four then-unreadable digits after 8 could supply 1 5 0 3, et al-; the first edition's [et] [de li al]tri needed three letters with no digit behind them. disiderio, succeder and propio (also 073r [p]ropio) are the enciphered forms; the first edition had normalized them to d[e]siderio, succeder[e], prop[r]io at the cost of a substitution or a supplied letter. The same reread confirmed, from the digits alone, the bishop of Modena, the enclosed capitulo, a non mancar, Sede Apostolica, Civitavecchia, terre di Lombardia, si potrà and non si lascerà parte alcuna indrieto; it did not confirm [S.M.tà] after instanza di, [que]sto, [non] possa, or the final di S.S.tà (an exact alternative is di saper che; the title needs a dot the transcription does not have). These were the reread's limits before the manuscript check. See the reread summary and the later manuscript findings below.
071v non tornarebbe anco a proposito: the public transcription has anco twice (5 7 2 7 4 5 7 2 7 4); the page has it once. The transcriber's dittographies (this one, 2 7 4 on the next line, 8 2 7 5 0 3 on 071v L09, 4 0 6 3 on 071v L20, 0 3 4 on 072r L07) total 21 duplicated digits. The corrected transcription removes them. They had produced the first edition's p[er] ora (page: V.S. può considerar), sendosi [c]osì firmat[o] (page: sendosi firmat[o]) and non solo lo conoscerà (page: non solo conoscerà).
071v, revised after a second blind reread, also before the manuscript check: reader's input and reading. le quali sue forze però o[l]tre che per lor stesse non sono grandi … et anco S.S.tà è costretta a dividerle: the digits 4 0̇ 8 0 2 8 were read S.M.tà s[a] che, which needed a 2 read as 5 outside the confusion classes and two 8 read as the null; oltre che needs the dot on 0̇ ignored and the 3 of l missing, and gives the correlative the sentence wants. il qual aiuto, sendosi [c]osì firmat[o]: 3 4 0 6 was read [c]osì; the manuscript check then showed the group 4 0 6 3 to be a transcriber's dittography, and the page reads sendosi firmat[o]. la medesima [co]nsideration, et levar le cagion a le […] calumnie: the null 9 stands where the first edition's supplied [e] and [i] would be; the clerk apocopates per cagion che in the same folio, so the exact forms are kept. Alternatives of equal cost the reader proposed, not adopted: a l'armata de' [legni] for dele na[v]i (6 for 7 instead of 6 for 1, both outside the classes; the letter says navi four times and legni never); è [anco] S.S.tà costretta for et [a]nco S.S.tà [è] costretta (1 for 5, outside the classes, instead of two supplied letters); a[d] altro effetto or a [u]n altro for [i]n altro (a missing digit instead of 5 for 6); neutraltà and banni as the exact letters of 7 8 1 80 2 5 03 80 5 and 72 5 7 7 7 6 (unattested; neutral[i]tà and ban[d]i kept). In in mo[d]o che S.M.tà [h]arà [c]ausa the digits 4 0̇ 5 are either o S.S.tà or S.M.tà a; the edition's grouping is the one after which 2 5 7 7 5 1 0 5 reads arà [c]ausa. The reader confirmed from the digits alone di S.S.tà di conservar, a [l]i trattati, [h]a[u]er, [co]nsideration, contri[bu]isse, fo[r]ze, dividerle, ob[li]gata, instan[z]a; it did not read tornarebbe, di S.M.tà Ces., po[t]r[à] or [h]arà [c]ausa [di] rest[a]rne. Those were limits of the reread before the ink check, not the status of every word in the current edition. See the reread summary and the manuscript findings below. The current brackets and alignment record the remaining departures.
073r cleartext Doppo la partita del Montepulciano: the transcription reads Montepescali; the courier is the Montepulciano of the cipher opening (Giovanni Ricci), and the sentence says no further letters from Poggio have arrived since he left.
A vocabulary check found 34 forms among the decipherment's 1,241 words absent from the 5 M-letter training corpus (concorrer, tenitorio, occorrerebbono, tornarebbe, offerso, ovunche, fiolo, estendino, dimandone = dimandonne, …). Corpus coverage does not establish whether a reading is correct. The corpus account also records duplicate text and overlap between training and held-out rows.
The folio break 072v/073r falls inside luogo: 072v ends with 0 3 (l) and 073r begins 1 4 7 5 4 (uogo) followed by a word mark.

What the letter says

This summary follows the proposed decipherment. It does not supply a separate witness for the unresolved passages. Historical sources and their limits appear in the article.

Since Ricci da Montepulciano left, the imperial ambassador Aguilar has been with the Pope and reported Andrea Doria's opinion on how to arm against the Turkish fleet, with a written summary (copy enclosed), asking that the Pope help the Emperor in this case, as Poggio had also written. The Pope's answer: as always he will not hold back anything within his means to satisfy the Emperor, at sea or in Hungary, wherever the need arises, and will contribute all the expense he can; but as it is not yet clear whether the greater danger is by land or by sea, one cannot yet decide where to spend, so as not to waste money in one place and be unable to help the other. He leaves this to the Emperor's prudence.
On the plan to arm a hundred ships: two reservations — a mixed fleet of galleys and ships has never done well, and fitting out a hundred ships takes so long that they would hardly serve this year, for which the expense is made. Nevertheless the Pope, beyond his own six galleys, will pay his share of the ships. As for the infantry to put on board, he is forced to use his own soldiers: the Papal State has many good soldiers used to going to war who, if not kept busy this way, could not be kept by any edict from taking pay from whoever offered it — which would trouble the Pope's state and would not suit the Emperor either; and the Pope has always meant to preserve his neutrality so that he remains fit to mediate the peace, and to remove the grounds for the calumny that he contributes money for purposes other than the defence against the Turk. So he will contribute in that way to the fleet with all his forces can bear, in a manner that will satisfy the Emperor.
The Pope's forces are small and already divided; part is the Hungarian subsidy, which he promised at the Emperor's request, made at Lucca, and which was settled in Rome with Granvelle. The Emperor also wanted the offer made publicly at the Diet in the Pope's name. The bishop of Modena (Morone) did so, and Poggio will see from the enclosed chapter of Morone's letter that the Pope is already bound to the sum offered and that the Germans are still not content and ask for more. With Hungary, the defence of Ancona, Civitavecchia and the other maritime places, and the guard of Lombardy — which cannot be neglected in the present suspense of minds — the Pope cannot now specify what he will give on this side or on that, not yet knowing from which side the greatest flood will come; but he will do his utmost, as willingly as if it were for his own use and interest, since he regards the Emperor's interest as his own.
Ridolfo Gonzaga, son of Giovan Francesco, is said to have taken a condotta from someone; he gathered troops at Luzzara (his brother Massimiliano's castle in the Mantuan territory), then, either because of the Marchese del Vasto's preparations to remove him by force or for some design of his own, moved to his own castle in the Parma territory, where he is fortifying and raising more men. Whether this is his own light-headedness or has a deeper foundation is not yet known, but the Legate has been given the warmest orders to stop the fortification and the gathering of men, by force if necessary, since the Pope will not allow any innovation in his dominion; troops have already been sent to Parma. Poggio will be informed of the outcome.
